The planning for the Arnold Arboretum Centennial celebration began in 1967 when Dr. Richard A. Howard, Arboretum Director from 1954-1978, appointed committees of supporters and visiting-committee members to raise funds for the upcoming event. John George Jack was born in Chateauguay, Quebec, Canada on April 15, 1861. In 1882 Jack became a member of the American Association for the advancement of Science in where he made contacts that eventually let to employment at the Arnold Arboretum. From 1882 to 1885 Jack attended lectures given by Harvard professors including Dr. Hermann August Hagen, Professor Alpheus Hyatt, and George Goodale.
